I am familier with the way the front end rolls under on the C and D
models and I like it better, it does look more finished but without
the vents/nostrils added it doesn't seem finished enough for my
liking.

I guess the idea would be to find a great shap C or D needing
nothing but personalizations added and get a set of the
vents/nostrils to add onto it.

Sorry I didn't call you back yesturday, I had to go to work after I
got off the phone with you.

I am very observant with eyes for the details, that is one thing
most of the long term members know me best for, is my ability to
spot things and discribe it in detail.

I planned to add the ducts to the nose on mine,
No biggie on the call, I have hearing problems and one of our phones wasnt happy, then we were out and I had to take care of some stuff,

Yep, eye on details saves all kinds of headaches,
I can't tell you how many times expecially looking for this donor vette the seller sends me pictures and I point out things they didn't know about their own car,

In the case of my laser the price started at 15,500.00
Way too much, the car was across the country from the seller in his brothers wearhouse,
During the 2 months of dealing and dickering the brother sent me tons of huge good pictures and I ended up paying 6500.00
I paid top dollar only because it has a full custom frame, no VW pan,
I got lucky and it turned out to be one of the best Laser bodies I have seen, I'm not sold my body is even made by Elite,

Where are they now?
Texas
bottom of the page

This blue one is nice, I like what he's done with the jams on
the doors, gives it a factory car feel.

The dark mat/rino spray look makes the detail allot nicer and
painting the inside of the door was a nice touch but I would of
gone a step further and even placed a leather or vinal padding
on the inside of the doors to give it a much more finished look.

The first laser I ever saw and sat in was a Red on Tan Elite
with a race porsche engine, man that was awesome.

If this guy ever sold, I'd want to buy it.
I don't even know the owners screen name
or how to contact them to ask if they ever
plan to sell.

This is the quality of Laser I'm interested
in Paul.

I dont know about the tacky ass antenna's
on the back though.

Do you know of a set of hinges that could be used
on the doors of the laser so they are not sticking
out like a sore thumb on the roof?

Has anybody done this yet, I'm sure if they have...
your about to post some photos of it lol

Shawk,
I see the Laser bug has bitten you big time,
Some things a person can learn in pictures other things can only be taken in when one gets up close and personal with a kit car,

Let's start with kit cars, the grass roots ones made basically as VW re bodies seldom compare to factory production cars,
A few are built very well and still are not really up to the standards of a basic Honda Chevy or Ford, too many kit cars are poorly built hack jobs,
I found the Sterling the best made of the early kits, the Laser is center ground, then cars like the Avengers are down the list,
No reason a VW based kit car can't be as nice if not a bit nicer than a VW beetle,

That Texas blue Laser seems to draw in lots of people, a friend of mine worked hard to track it down and buy it last year, didn't happen,
On closer look it had silly looking antennas and dorky tacked on backup lights,
I doubt the door sills are coated in rhino or lizard skin, it won't work on a Laser,
When a person goes to get in and slid there butt over the sill it would be a kin to sliding over 80 grit,
Mine is painted flat black, good but not great, the best treatment I have seen is stainless steel panels there,
That Texas car is like mine in that is has a custom frame of some sort in the world of VW based kit cars their normally add a grand or two, for example all other things the same my car would be around 5K if on a stock VW pan but around 7-7.5 on the custom chassis,

Back to getting up close and personal with kit cars,
I have no problem with the small flat stainless hinges on my doors, they work very well and I never fix things that are not broken,
A few people tried to make hidden or better hinges, the Best are Barrys, but still they are just hidden into the roof and door not really hidden,
A couple people tried to do the doors like a real 917 flipping forward but the results are less than pristine,
Dan Melson keeps telling me he is working on a hidden hinge that flops the door forward but never got back to me on it,
To hide hinges on a Laser with the doors gull wing style would take a lot of thought and planning, the hinges would be on the inside down the center of the roof T bar and that is right in the way,

The doors while reinforced are just one thickness not a inner and outer part, very much like a real race car, they came with some upholstery on them why they didn't cover all the raw glass I will never know,

Kit cars are a list of pros and cons, a person has to be willing to deal with the shortcomings and desynchronizes of the kit car to enjoy them,
I used two as daily drivers, too me they compared to using a VW beetle as a daily driver,
I added AC a must in FL
On the other hand I drove two different radical custom vettes daily, which they vettes while "looking" radical where still production in manners of driving,

I believe a Laser could make a wonderful daily driver, there is storage space behind the seats, the doors and windows can seal well against weather and with AC added they are comfortable,
On the down side the Laser is very radical, at every stop a person is going to be hit with many questions, I never like to be rude or arrogant, people just want to know about the weird car, so when I used the others as drivers I had little flyers printed up that gave all the info on the car, it really saved me on days I just didn't have the time or felt like car talk,

...We Are The Music Makers & We Are the Dreamers Of The Dreams...
Cheers,
P.

That is hilarious and awesome at the same time!

I can just see you pulling into the grocery store to grab some milk on your way home after a long day at work... "Hey Mister! What's up that that crazy car?!"

"Here you go. This flyer will tell you all about it... it's been a long day."

Too many people with kits or customs are on some cheesy ego trip, they act like in some misplaced way the interest or praise their car is getting is same as them getting it and that is not the case a jackass is still a jackass no matter how nice his car is,

I basically type as I talk to people, and I don't just give anyone a blow off no matter how tired or even feeling poorly I might be,
On line with posts and emails I can wait until I feel like doing it,
Now the same out and about in person,

Now with the Internet which I didn't have back then I get to add cool web sites like Priceofhistoys,to the flyer for the kit car fans,
When you hand a person a cool made flyer they feel like they have something.
Plus, it worked 15 years ago and is working better now I get small sponsors for my cars, businesses offer discounts or even free items for me just printing their name or adding their decal to my car,
I get all my import VW parts at cost just because I have a small parts store decal on the fan housing of my Laser,

Attention of Kit cars doesn't end there, many times I had to get out of the way of a stunned looky lou staring at the car rather than watching where they were going,
My Sterling had 2 inches of ground Clearance and the roof was 38 inches from the ground,
That is about the bottom of the side window on most production cars,
My buddy Danny who drove an Avenger daily had a fellow in the next lane run into the car ahead from staring at Dannys car,

P.

Well I figured it wasn't rino but just how it looks, a mat black.
The anntenna's and back up lights can always be removed. I guess
I'm glad he didn't sell it before, only leaves it more possible
for me if he ever decides to and now I'm watching.

This is more of an example as to the quality of Laser I'm
interested in.

I'm still wondering what those white blocks in the door jam are
for, you think it's home made AC ducts? That and the squirly
tube piping by the shifter... wtf is that for?

Anyway I'll be watching but if you see something first, please post
here in this thread as lasers are for sell. I want to keep laser talk
on a single thread because this is a Mako site after all and I don't
want to upset people that might find this type of incessent chatter
upsetting on a Mako forum.

BTW, the laser bug bit me long ago, it's nothing new, just the
ability to do something about it is newer.

I want to have a few cars, I own two already,
I just need the last two
My Mako
My Pontiac T/A WS6
a Laser 917
and I want to own another 59 convertible Impala,
I used to have one before when I was 20, I still
kick my self for selling it.

I would think if you fear Mako fans being put off with Laser talk here perhaps this entire thread should have been on the Laser forum,

There is also my yahoo group Grass roots kit cars and two yahoo laser groups,

I normally post net finds right to the Laser group,
I believe I will be stepping up at "price" to post cars for sale there also, but in this case if I find what you are after I will send it to you first, thing is what you want won't last long,

I studied that car back when my friend wanted it,
I would have to assume the odd and ugly white blocks are vents of some sort as they would point at your body while sitting in the car,

The odd twisted lines on the drivers side of the center console is for a line lock for the brakes, why they stuck it out there like a tur$ is a punchbowl I have no idea,

Also the silly little steering wheel is a nightmare in traffic,

My laser runs a tilt tele column from an 82 CE vette and Momo wheel,
