"Hinges"
May-27-04, 01:00 PM (EDT)
Went junkin' today, and guess what!!! I found the hinges that were used on my Mako front end. '68 Chevy Impala. Cleaning them up now, and will be trying to get them on over the next couple of days.

At the risk of sounding presumptuous, it does't sound like you will be using them. Randy has sent me A set of prints, my interest is in refining them with my metal working skills.

I was hoping that your need was because you secretly obtained a Maco... I imagined that it may even be a convertable Maco.

Once my hood has hinges and is opening, and if I did not use Randy's hinges, then I will be more then happy to send them to you.

One thing Randy's hinges really need is springs.

The other thing that I would like to do is figure out a low profile way to open (and close) the hood automatically. Of course my first thought involved hydraulics, but there is way too much needed in the way of a support system for that (pump, hoses, etc). The other thought involved gears, motor and a couple of sensors.

Springs are whats missing, good call. Your other ideas are awesome, way beyond my ability. Thanks for the consideration. Someone in up state NY got that vert. My current interest is making things, with pics or prints, hands on, like them hinges, its something I'm good at, may as well stay in my realm for now, enjoy your 4th. Harry.

This is a shot of the hinges used on Amelias shark (Bohannon kit)
The car is the red one with blue stripes located in the Gallery page of the owners section. The reversed hood hinge set up.

Yeah I need to go to a yard and find som dim 68 hinges my self. My drivers side hinge is wacky loose and makes it imposible for the hood to line up at all. My Maco has the cursed slack jaw/hood sindrome. I only need one cause it's just so damn loose, the passanger side hinge is fine. I think you can find 68 impala hinges on ebay though.

I'd like to know which set would give me the best vertical opening. I want full tilt without the nose scraping.

I think any of the hinges will really give you that... it is a matter of setting them up at the right angle & placement.
