"Cost of a mako front clip and rear clip"
Jul-29-14, 02:06 AM (EDT)
I am curious what is a decent cost to pay for a front clip and rear clip for the mako shark. I ran across someone who claims these were from the 70's and he brought them years ago. Only problem the rear clip has the gas cap directly in the center. Is this a mold? Anyhow the fiberglass on both parts is workable- repairable and since I have always wanted a Mako I am considering purchashing these parts until I find a good donor car. His price is 3,000.00 total. Is this a good starting point for a project such as this.

The guy from Tenn. (Bohannon) gets around $3500 for each clip, I believe. Gas cap can be on the drivers side or in the center. What kind of tail light openings? If you're willing to wait, you might pick up someone's abandon project for not much more.

I sent the guy another message and asked more detail questions. The hinges are not on the front clip, and he is not sure if he has the lower frt fender panels, also he does not have the grill fro the front clip where the headlights are and the 2 stainless steel hood scoop pieces he does not have but he says these cost over 2000 a piece and he knows where I might get a pair from. The rear clip I was going to mold the center gas cap in and put it on the driver rear corner using a new modern flip cap that blends with the color of tohe car. I am not a fan of the racing cap. Got one on my Daytona and it does take away from the smooth lines. He says the tail lights were converted to an 82 style vette but can easily be converted back to the orig, Look like this is starting to be less promising since I need so many key pieces.

If you bought a new one from the guy in Tenn. you'll still need all that stuff (I don't know of anybody who sells a complete Maco "kit"). If you don't want to chase down parts (and that's half the fun, right?) you might want to pick up somebody's abandon project.

3K for a front and rear when all fiberglass pieces would be there seems to me OK.
BUT, the missing fenders IS a PROBLEM !
Without them i wouldnt pay that much, not as easy to find pieces.

Abouth the stainless scoops i understand this are the "cooling elements" attached to the hood domes.
If so, 2K is way overpriced !!!!
For less then 2K this could be manufactured from ground up new with milling a block of stainless steel.
A much MUCH cheaper solution is to go with aluminum cooling bars. They can be ordered by meter with different profiles.
I payd for mine as i remember 270 euro in germany by a company which is specialised in producing cooling profiles.

Maybe he knows something we all dont know. Smile

I agree on the cost with so many pieces missing. I continue to research and find out what it cost to build a mako shark from the ground up, the wheels, the paint , the body work involved, the drive train, interior and it all does add up but you will have what you want at the end of the build. I will keep my eyes open and hopefully find a project that is at least 50% done but if the price is right I will jump on a turn key.
Thanks for the input guys.

At Carlisle I talked to Jim Teasley.
He is buddies with John Bohannon and will gladly hook you up with him.
He will do anything from selling you pieces to building you a complete Maco.
Call Jim at:
