"Short-Tail progress......................."

Been boiling in the temperatures here.............. been over a hundred degrees for more than a few days ! OUCH !!!

Got new radiator fans installed -- when I added the a/c condenser....... it ran 20 to 25 degrees hotter. I went from 2500 cfm to 4500 cfm, so that should do the trick !

With the tranny running too hot, I removed the cooler and fan from inside the side louver and moved up front...........installed one on each side (along with fans) in the front of the inner fender wells. Added a shield between the tire and fan/cooler for rock protection !

I've also started color sanding and polishing the paint............ starting to look pretty good ! Still got a bunch to do before Carlisle, but I hope to have her ready by then !!!

Rick

Glad to see your progress.
I have not finished putting mine back together yet.
this hip is making almost everything impossible to do.
Hope your new system works for you.

Figured I'd give you an update.......................

The car now runs at 180 degrees in the heat........ even with the newly charged a/c going. I'm very happy with that..... especially since the a/c is blowing ice cold inside -- mid thirties out the vent !!! My neighbor, Roy borrowed the machine and vacuumed the system out for 1 1/4 hours and then we got the 1.8 lbs of R134 in her Thursday nite when it dropped to 73 degrees outside........... so I need to see how she does on a 95 degree day !

Tranny is now running at 130 degrees without the fans going on a mid-nineties day....... I'm extremely happy with that, but I've only put 10 miles on her ! I've gotta get some seat time in the car to make sure everything will function properly on the long haul !!!

Been polishing/polishing/polishing................ lookin' pretty good now........ still more to do, but she's coming along !!!

Rick

............... oh yea........... I don't know who that short fat guy is in the last pic !!!!!!!!!!

Still getting the bugs hammered out................. got some seat time in this past week............ the short-tail is doing pretty well.

Got a couple things to get fixed though...........

I decided to check my power lines to the new fans I installed a couple of weeks ago........... the old Flex-a-lite set up drew 20 some amps......... while the new fans draw 50 amps at start up and run at 30 to 35 amps ! I checked the battery box and the fuse block I installed...... could have had a catastrophe with my fan power. 30 amp fuse melted into the fuse block......... still was working, but would not have lasted long !!! I ran new 4 gauge wire......... replacing the 8 gauge that was in there, so I figured I was good to go........ NOT !!!!!

Took the car out for a long cruise today and she did great until I shut her down. The radiator fans kept running......... and would not shut down ! Once I got home, I disconnected wires from the control unit with no results, so it dawned on me that the relay I used was a 30/40 amp .......... oops ! Hadn't replaced it with a bigger one. At least it fried it in the on mode ! Disconnected the new power wire and she shut down, so now I've got a larger one on order !

I also installed a 4 gauge wire from the positive post on the alternator to the battery to make sure I've got good power going directly to the battery......... not just thru the standard smaller wires. Oh yeah............ did put fuses in both lines !!!

Rick

WOW - Glad you got lucky with that!
SUre would hate to see the results had it gone "down the gurgler."

One of the things often overlooked in picking wire gauge size - The Length in relation to the current.
If you have 10 feet - you actually use 20 feet for the calculations.

So from the ABYC Tables 10 feet (20 feet for calculations) 12 volts @ 50 amps gives you 4 Gauge. And that's with a 3% drop!

Sometimes it better to be lucky than good! Your rewire should be good.

Cheers - Jim

A handy chart to print out if you need it again:

And, if you are into the maths, here's a set of sizes and formulae:
